Zircon geochronology suggests a long-living and active magmatic system beneath the Ciomadul volcanic dome field (eastern-central Europe)

چکیده
Ciomadul is the youngest volcano in eastern-central Europe. Although its last eruption occurred at ca. 30 ka, there are independent indications for a high-crystallinity magma reservoir persisting beneath until present. In order to further test hypothesis of long-lived melt presence and better constrain nature timescales associated with subvolcanic storage system, over 500 zircon U-Th U-Pb spot ages (crystal interiors outer surfaces) were interpreted from dacitic rocks most productive eruptive period (the Young Eruptive Period; YCEP, 160-30 ka). Zircon surface lava dome pumice samples range 600 ka up event ka. They form continuous age distribution some single crystals reveal significant zonation (>150 kyr difference core rim). The oldest YCEP overlap events Old Period (1000–330 spectra, combined textural data, point prolonged (several 100's kyr) residence highly crystalline mush state. crystallization temperature (from ?750 °C solidus ?680 °C) consistent results thermometry on amphibole plagioclase felsic crystal clots, which represent fragments. To maintain such long time above solidus, input by deeper recharge required. model calculations constrained thermal modelling imply an average rate about 1.3 × 10?4 km3/yr 2 Myr. Such estimate allows us calculate extrusive/intrusive ratio 1:25–1:30. suggest that zone 35 km3 still present within reservoir. Importantly, plumbing system thus remains thermally primed renewed injection could lead rapid reawakening apparently inactive volcano.

Zircon U-Pb geochronology links the end-Triassic extinction with the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province.
The end-Triassic extinction is characterized by major losses in both terrestrial and marine diversity, setting the stage for dinosaurs to dominate Earth for the next 136 million years. Despite the approximate coincidence between this extinction and flood basalt volcanism, existing geochronologic dates have insufficient resolution to confirm eruptive rates required to induce major climate pertur...

[1] Images from satellite interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) reveal uplift of a broad 10 km by 20 km area in the Three Sisters volcanic center of the central Oregon Cascade Range, 130 km south of Mt. St. Helens. The last eruption in the volcanic center occurred 1500 years ago. Multiple satellite images from 1992 through 2000 indicate that most if not all of 100 mm of observed upli...

Tabriz Basin has had extensive Cenozoic and Quaternary volcanic activity and lies in NW Iran within the collision zone of the Arabian and Eurasian plates. Formations in the region consist of siliciclastic rocks of the Miocene age (Upper red formation), along with younger dacite volcanic rocks. The Bahlul Daghi volcanic dome in the south of Spiran is variable in terms of the composition between ...

متن کاملThe magmatic plumbing system beneath Santiaguito Volcano, Guatemala
a r t i c l e i n f o The silicic dome complex of Santiaguito, Guatemala, has exhibited continuous extrusive activity for 90 years. Despite its longevity, remarkably little is known about the magmatic plumbing system beneath Santiaguito. Here, we use petrological analyses of lava samples to define this plumbing system, from storage in the lower to mid-crust through to extrusion onto the surface...
